Yet Another Question “Monitors”
Posted by Ray Sherman on April 10, 2008 at 12:02 amFirst I want to thank all of you for the great response in theis forum. I really appreciate all the help from you pro’s.
“Here we go with another question” What are your suggestions for a good video editing monitor? I’m mainly interested in one that’s either 19″ or 20″ neighborhood. I have looked at Dell monitors on line, but it seems that everyone has a negative statement in their reviews on each one. I realize that is usually the case with any thing, therefore I would like to get some good suggestions from you experienced folks. Again, your suggestions are and will be most appreciated. Thanks, RayHarold Brown replied 18 years, 1 month ago 5 Members · 8 Replies -

April 10, 2008 at 1:02 amTrust me when I say to go for at least a 24″ monitor.
I have one and my kids’ 20″ looks positively puny beside it.
I went with a Dell 2407 but it’s no longer available.
A co-worker of mine recently bought a 28″ I-Inc from Tiger Direct (I’d never heard of the brand either) but he loves it!! -

April 10, 2008 at 2:31 amI use a Samsung LCD 32″ Flat panel TV as my Monitor. I do video mostly so I can see it on what most people watch video on. It has tons of inputs so I can use it for 2 computers, one VGA and one DVI to HDMI cable, TV, component from my HDV camera, composite from my SD GL1 and VCR, DVD what ever. Try it and you’ll find it hard to go back. Danny

April 10, 2008 at 12:51 pmHi Guy’s,
Ok, now you got me thinking about a little larger monitor. Sounds like it’s probably the way to go. I do want a two monitor system. I have never owned one of the newer flat screen LCD monitors, therfore I don’t know how they are plugged in to the computer or for that matter to each other.
Are they daisy chained by means of usb or firewire?
I have a Sony DCR-VX2100 and a Sony HDR-HC7. As you know, one is 4:3 with the other being HD 16:9. With that being said, a couple other questions come to mind;
1)Can these LCD monitors be set up for either aspect ratio?
2)In your opinion, would you go for a widescreen or standard version?
I know I ask a lot of questions and your help “is” very much appreciated. Thanks again, Ray -

Widescreen is great. A 22″ widescreen is roughly the same height as a 19″ standard. The aspect ratio is not an issue as letterbox will occur when it needs to.
For a two monitor set-up, usually there will two outputs on your video card – one is DVI and one is RGB/analog/VGA. (check your video card). So, with the right cables you’ll plug one into each of those.
Many people love the 24″ but I honestly felt it was too big for me. My eyes were searching too far and wide. What I did was get a 22″ (widescreen)LCD and set it next to my older 19″ (4:3) LCD. It just so happens that they are both the same height and so I get a nice flow from one to the other.
I think a two monitor set-up is a good idea. Being able to dedicate your second monitor to Scopes or Full screen Preview, or Pro-Titler, or anything you want is great. Some even stretch the timeline across the two.People seem to like the Dell stuff, I’m used to Samsung, I didn’t like the Westinghouse 24″ some were recommending. I got a Samsung 226BW. It’s not perfect, but there’s always soemthing not perfect in these sub-$1000 screens. I’m happy with it, as well as my 19″ Samsung 930b (discontinued).
If you get more into editing you may eventually want a ntsc reference “broadcast” monitor, aside from these others.

April 10, 2008 at 11:16 pmI have a nVidia 8800GT 512MB Video Super Clocked card with two DVI connectors. I run dual Gateway® FHD2400 24″ Monitors. IMHO it is the only way to go. I love the Gateways, no dead pixels, they have a good quality image and rotate to a portrait view. It’s all about work flow. I do some web design as well and having the editor running along with the website and photoshop is no problem.

April 11, 2008 at 1:02 pmHi,
Thanks for the replies! I believe that I’ll go for two 24″ monitors. I am a little confused as to which type to look for LCD, VGA, DVI. As of right now I believe that I would need to make sure that both are DVI along with a dual head graphics card for DVI. I have read several places that an NTSC monitor will not render digital images correctly. Upon looking at some LCD monitors in my area, I have noticed some giving off neon looking colors. This is one of the main reasons I turned to you guys for your expertise in finding the correct make and model as well as setup. I don’t want a monitor that will stretch any of my 4:3 footage if using a widescreen monitor, therefore I need to make sure that both aspects of 4:3 and 16:9 is switchable. I’m not against a widescreen or standard monitor; I just want a couple that will give me the best true picture in both aspect worlds.
Thanks again, and your input is very much appreciated. Ray -

April 12, 2008 at 1:52 amYou need to google the monitors and see opinions. I have never heard much good about the cheaper Samsungs. I could have gotten the 24 inch Samsung at Sams Club for $389.
