[Ron Whitaker] “I’m still trying to “categorize,” if possible, the containers and the best usage of each.”
Let me see if I can help by providing more feedback on your original statements.
[Ron Whitaker] “I get the feeling that certain containers in the Render As dialog box are superior in certain situations than others.”
Actually it’s the codecs more than the containers that are important.
[Ron Whitaker] “For example, as I’ve read many of the messages on this forum, I’ve noticed that if your final output is going to be broadcast on tv, then the Sony .MXF container is the one of choice.”
Yes, that’s because MXF is becoming a popular standard for broadcast but you have to pay particular attention to what codec the station is expecting. If they want MPEG-2 in an MXF container and you send them AVC/h.264 in an MXF container they might not accept your file even though it’s MXF. So the codec is just as important as the container in comes in.
[Ron Whitaker] “I also get the feeling that if you’re simply going to have the final video on the internet, then MainConcept AVC or Sony AVC are the containers of choice.”
Yes they produce MP4 files using the AVC/h.264 codec which has become a ubiquitous internet cross-platform standard.
[Ron Whitaker] “If you need an alpha channel (for something like a lowers thirds), the Quicktime container is the way to go.”
Yes but why? will any QuickTime file do? No! QuickTime has the ability to use PNG and it’s own Animation codec which will carry an alpha channel. Codecs like M-JPEG or AVC/h.264 in a QuickTime container will not. So once again, it’s not so much the QuickTme container as it is the Animation and PNG codecs that it can contain.
[Ron Whitaker] “If you’re final video is going to end up on DVD, the MPEG-2 container is the one to choose.”
As far as I know, the MPEG-2 container only carries the MPEG-2 codec inside so this is one where the container and the codec are the same and Yes, this is what DVD’s require.
[Ron Whitaker] “Am I on track here, or have I simplified this concept too much?”
You are on track but you have simplified it too much. You need to be aware of hat codec you are putting in which container. Both are equally important and both need to be taken into account to make some of your statements true.
[Ron Whitaker] “Is there a document or website that discusses the containers in Sony Vegas and situations when you’d want to use each one?”
The Full HD book by VASST might be a good place to start.
