I am thinking of getting a fcp system using 1TB xserve Raid. Is there a noise issue with the xserve Raid? Can I keep it rack mounted in my edit bay without having a sound issue?

The Xraid is considerably louder than my Medea RTRX SCSI drives. It could be a concern depending on room layout.

    These work great on noise.

Put GBICs on and put it 2K away, doubt if you will here it then.

Seriously, use glass and move it if noise is a problem.

Mine is loud enough to be a nuisance. I’ll certainly get a soundproof enclosure for it.

It’s a bit louder than a G5, but not as loud as the original Xserves.

But why a 1TB RAID? I think the Xraid is only worth getting if you max out it’s drives. Otherwise there are cheaper solutions for 1TB of storage.

Which Xraid do you have? How is it for HD?

3.5TB. It’s great for HD – I get over 300MB/s read, 200MB/s write configured RAID50. If you get one, just make sure it’s fully populated with drives.

Yes, we have several 3.5s too, yet have you found the point where they get full and the write performance drops? I was thinking of striping 2 together to be able to do 4:4:4 outputs.

    Any thoughts?

I’ve not filled mine up enough yet!

Two Fibre cards, and four RAID halves together? That should be more than enough for 4:4:4 capture. I think a single RAID is enough for 4:4:4 playback, and on the verge of being able to capture.

At our big rollout for FCP 5 last May in Hollywood I was working with a Engineer from Apple setting up the system which consisted of a couple XRaids striped together. He was telling me that he found better performance with one rather than striping two. Go figure
