If anybody has any advice, I’m all ears…

So, today, somebody accidentally yanked the power out of the fiber channel switch on our shared storage system (still don’t know who did it). So all our bays suddenly lose access to our shared server, and I go back to investigate. I shut down and re-start our XServe RAIDs, in an attempt to get things back…no dice.

So I pop open the RAID Admin, track down the problem to the fiber channel switch (I know, I should’ve done that first), and go back to check on it, low and behold, the power cable was out. Plugged it back in. Probem solved, right?

Except now 1 RAID Controller on each of 2 of our XServes are acting weird – the drive array under them wont show up anymore, the green light on the controller is flashing instead of steady (but still green), and when I open the RAID Admin, it’s like the whole system is jammed up – it just keeps saying “RAID controller starting up” forever and ever and does nothing. It’s also got a little yellow dot in the admin panel (under “components”) by the controller and it says “warning” but gives no other explanation. The other controller and array in the same unit are working just fine.

    Help?

I’m thinking of resetting the RAID Controller but am afraid of losing data if I do that. I’ll hit up tech support tomorrow but tonight they’ve all gone home (lucky…).

Dammit, Jim, I’m a motion designer, not a network engineer. 🙁

this advice might already be too late since its a few days later, but here you go:

since you’re using a fibre channel switch, i assume that this is an Xsan setup. if so, make sure EVERYTHING is turned off. then start things up in this order:

    1. fibre switch – if its a QLogic, wait a few minutes for it to go through its boot cycle and the “heart” is beating
    2. RAIDs
    3. ethernet switches
    4. metadata controllers (do the volumes appear on the desktop?)
    5. client computers (do the volumes appear on the desktop?)

this whole process will take about 15-20 minutes. if this doesnt work, then i would advise that you not do anything at this point until your network guys come back. you could do more damage.
