  • XSERVE RAID SETUP??

Posted by Liam Lawyer on November 28, 2006 at 4:28 pm

Alright, I know this is a somewhat loaded question, but can anyone share how they have their Xserve Raid setup? Type of Raid? Where can I find more info on this?? Is it really a complicated thing at all?

We are working with a single system, but might be adding others in the future..

    Thanks for any help.

    Liam,

My XSR is in two halves, each at RAID5 into a G5 There are two ports on the HBA so they just appear as two drives.
You could RAID them together at RAID50 for extra speed should you wish, but you will still need the two SFP cables.

This is pure speculation, but iscsi is big news and going to be much bigger in the future 🙂
It also menas that you won’t need an expensive fibre channel switch to do multiple clients on a SAN

Thanks for your insight! I think we are looking to do raid 50 for more speed.. FYI We are using a MacPro 3ghz and have the full 7.2 TB in the XSR. We are mainly working with DVCpro HD and 10 bit SD. Do you have any thoughts on where I could learn more on day to day issues?

And thanks for the iSCSI info! I will keep my eye out for it..

Read through the XRAID board at apple.com (in the Support>Discussions section). Loads of “Issues” there!
