  • Xpresso Question – Spline Ends Connected to Two Separate, Moving Points

Posted by Per Sverre wold-hansen on May 7, 2013 at 2:11 pm

I need to have a “balloon” high up on a tether (spline) being towed behind a moving, rolling ship. My plan is trying to use a hair Tag (Spline dynamics)on the spline to make the tether move realistically.

But I also need to constrain motion by connecting both ends of the spline -> ONE end of the spline to a point on the ballon, and THE OTHER END to a point on the vessel – Both ends “fastened” by Xpresso.

My Xpresso knowledge is unfortunately very basic.

Cannot figure it out… Any help to be had here?

You don’t need Xpresso to constrain the spline. I would use the Hair>Constraint tag to connect the cable to the ship and leave the end of the spline free so that dynamics can work properly (use positive gravity to make it float). Then I’d use Xpresso to connect the balloon to the end of the spline.

WOW! Good idea! – So tying TWO ends of a spline to two separate objects (Xpresso) will not work?
    – Anyways – Your suggestion seems brilliant! Will try that! Thanks!

You could tie both ends to different objects. That would just require two constraint tags. But I think it would be harder to create a realistic-looking animation that way.
