I just recently bought the academic version of Avid Xpress Pro, but am having strange problems with trying to set up my desktop.

When I enter a project, the default setting has the bins, timeline and composer windows all on top of one another, so I’ve been trying to set it as I like it – timeline and composer in the right hand monitor, and bins in the left – but the windows are taking on a life of their own! If I move the composer window to the right, sometimes it will sit there happily, but then if I move it slightly it will snap back to it’s original position in the left hand monitor! Same for the timeline and bin windows! Basically, I am holding the mouse button down and dragging them to where I want them, and when I release the mouse button sometimes they will stay where they are, and sometimes they will snap back to their original position.

I have a lot of experience with Avid but have never encountered this before, having always worked in suites where this has all been set up. I am pleading for your help!

Have you gone to tools set>save settings (I think thats where it is – I’m not in front of the Avid at the moment)? You might try deleting the MCState (C:/Program Files/Avid/Avid Xpress/Settings).

Yes I have tried save settings, but when I close the project and come back in again, it is all back to where it was. It’s strange, because I’ve customised the keyboard and it is holding my customised keyboard settings, but it is just this issue with the windows.

So has no-one come across this before, where the windows won’t stay where you put them? It really is driving me mad now…

Have you deleted your MCState file? You might try creating new user settings as well.

Does your system meets specs? Things like OS, RAM, video card, etc?

There is no MCState file in the directory you specified, but I found one in

    Programme files/Avid/AvidProjects/AvidUsers/Steven

(Steven being my user setting I’ve created)

Is it safe then to delete this MCState file?

Yes, it’s safe to delete that file. If you back out one level, there should be a folder called settings, and the MCState file should be in there…

Oh Yeah, there’s one there as well. I’ll just go and delete both of these then will I?

Meant to say in my last post, my computer OS, RAM etc is all fine for running Avid, and I have a good graphics card

Hi, did you ever get this sorted, – I have found the same problem.

    Hi there,

no I haven’t got it sorted, and I’m VERY glad to hear of someone else having the same problem! Gives me some comfort at least in some weird way.

I have deleted the MC State files and this made no difference. The only thing I can think it might be is my graphics card. I am using an NVIDIA GeForce card, although I noticed on avid’s site it suggests using NVIDIA Quaddro, so I don’t kow if this would cause it? Could it be possible that my graphics card is too good? What graphics card are you using?

Hi, the mcstate file self loads every time the program is started so this seems a waste of time – graphics card is Radeon 9600, – I’ve also had this thought, but at present am exploring the possibilities of sourcing an upgrade to avid 5.8 to see if this cures the problem. Could I ask where you obtained your avid application? you can email me direct at bp@sportfoto.co.uk

Just to let people know, I finally managed to find the solution to this problem. I had had my right hand monitor set as my primary monitor, but apparently xp doesn’t like this, and this was what caused the weird snapping to occur. I changed my settings so as the left monitor is now my primary monitor and Bingo! Everything is now working as it should.

    Bloody computers
