XP SP3, Computers and Vegas

Sorry Allen,
Have no intention of ever using SP3…So can’t contribute any
experience to your query. But from what i accurately gather, there would not be any issues or conflict with vegas or any application you have installed.(seamless integration from what i see and researched).

have got SP3 on and had no problems at all , if anything my computer is 15 – 20% faster all round.

had it on since release. no problems at all, only put it on because my local nerd said it made xp faster. unfortunately, he was right as he usually is.

If this is your editing computer that you generate income from, you should seriously consider a complete backup of your C: partition before installing something as drastic as a Service Pack.

There is a thread going on right now on the Sony forums where some people are reporting no problems as you see here while others are telling horror stories of how it completely messed up their PC, their firewire stopped working (or at least their camera was not recognized because SP3 placed a firewall on their firewire port!), and it took days to recover. One guy had to go back to SP1 and then apply SP2 again to get back where he was.

This should never happen to any professional. If you don’t regularly backup your computer (at least your C: drive) you are asking for trouble. I have Acronis TrueImage set up to do a complete backup of my C: drive once a month and an incremental backup every day. These backups go to a folder on my 1TB D: drive and I hardly know it’s happening. Just set it and forget it.

I have not installed SP3 yet but if I did and it completely trashed my machine, I would be up and running again in 10 minutes from this morning’s partition image. System Restore is NOT something I would trust to back out of a Service pack gone bad. In fact, I have it turned off since I can restore to any day of the week for the previous month using TrueImage.

What if after installing SP3 your PC won’t boot? I had that happen to me after applying SP2. Are you willing to re-install XP and re-install and re-license and activate all of the software on your computer including having to call some vendors on the phone because their activation doesn’t let you activate a second time? That would take days. Do you have days?

It could go fine… it could trash your computer. You gotta ask yourself, “am I feeling lucky today”. 😉 Please backup your C: partition before attempting anything like this. Acronis TrueImage has a 30-day free trial where it’s fully functional so it costs you nothing for this protection but I bet you wind up buying it. I tried a lot of backup software and this one seems to be the best. Like I said, if this PC produces income, can you afford to have it down for days?

I really would agree that you should create a restore
point Allen…Personally as in my earlier post wont venture down that route…i have too many personalized setting etc…and if anything throws my suite off track it would be a headache to get things organize again. Isn’t worth it for me.

Wow! I’ll look into this Acronis TrueImage for my editing machine. However on my internet/junk computer I use Carbonite which is an online backup and secure storage. That’s $50 a year. And it works silently in the background also. the minute I change a file or add a file, it’s backed up immediately.

I have been just using the XP backup on the editing computer.

I can admit, there’s absolutely no problem with sp3 and vegas. Even all the hotfixesafter sp3 (there are quite a few). I have it all installed, as my computer is the only one, used for editing, internet and everything else 😉

If it’s about backing up a partition, check out driveimage xml.
It’s an ingeniuos free tool, it also can be integrated into Barts PE, thus able to backup and _restore_ system drives as well.
