We have a machine that has XP and the uninstalled upgrade to XP 64. I know that XP 64 is being circumvented by Vista kind of like ME was by XP. Anybody sticking with or loyal to XP 64 or is Vista the only way to cut? I want to upgrade the OS when I upgrade to CS3. Please let me know your thoughts.

    Thank You for your input!

Go with Vista if the driver problems for your equipment are solved by then.

CS3 will run nicely on Vista 32, but I had hassles with Vista 64 regarding the Decklink drivers. There aren’t any. But DV is probably fine. The other weird thing (at least for me) is that I can’t install Squueze or Procoder 2.0 on my Vista system. The install setup program stalls on Procoder and when Squeeze is installed, there qare no compression presets available. Might be something to do with Windows Media Runtime 11.

Yes therein lies my initial apprehension, I remember I had issues updating from 98 to XP and all the fixes and band aids etc. I appreciate the information and I will use this board as a knowledge base as soon as CS3 is released.

My suggestion is that wait for all the issues/dirvers/bugs are fixed with Vista (or at least microsoft releases spervice pack for Vista). One hand you are going from a familiar to unproven OS and if you can’t afford system down then better stick to Windows XP.

Another question: Adobe is not supporting 64 bit so why would you want to get 64 bit OS? to utilize the true power of 64 bit the code has to be written ground up.(and that require resources…so I dought that Adobe will do it in near future)
You may get into lot of comatibility issues, and not much performance gain.

I have read on this and other forums as well that the project size and RAM usage issues so away with a 64 OS even though Adobe is still old school 32. I can of course keep XP and just keep it the same as at this point this rig is treating me just fine, I just want to know my options and if I hear that XP64 will play nicely or Vista will have drivers worked out then I may make the jump, but if it is issue city then maybe I will just keep her the same. I just want to be able to stay current with other programs if they need 64 and not paint myself in a corner on either side….

    Thanks for the reply!

It will run under 32 bit subsystem in 64 bit OS, so where is the bang?

You may want to consider also the new quad core dual Xenon based system. Hardware guys are way ahed. Now software needs to utilize this true multi tasking/threading are way behind.(except some of Autodesk/Avid softwares). This will definately give you more bang for your money regardless of 64/32bit-XP/Vista.

So in my opinion if your system is capable of handing the current load then stay with it. Wait for a year or so to all these issues worked out and prices will be lower, then make a jump with better hardware/OS and hopefully truly multi-threded Adobe CS-6 or so will be there… if not swith to Avid.
