XML re-connect issue
Posted by Rick Price on February 7, 2007 at 10:51 pmWondering if anyone has experience importing XML files from a Digital Asset Management System like Pictron or other. My question is why would FCP not allow me to re-connect a media file from an xml that it finds via the re-connect dialog. The point is I am generating a “batch list” XML from my DAM and digitizing that list in FCP. But if I import that exact same “batch list” again and ask FCP to “re-connect” it does not activate the “connect” button after finding the clips. Being able to do this would obviously eliminate redundant digitizing of clips. Any thoughts or advice would be appreciated

February 8, 2007 at 12:19 amtry turning off the “matched name only” option in the reconnect dialog and then reconnect the clips manually… it may be that on capture FCP is adding a hidden .mov extension to the file name, which does then not match exactly with the Batch List generated by the XMl import

February 8, 2007 at 6:00 pmThanks for the reply Andy. I tried your suggestion but still nothing. After selecting re-connect, I select search it finds the clip, I can choose it, but still will not recognize it as a found file and therefore does not activate the connect button. What is the basis of FCP recognizing that it is the exact same clip? There must be a discrepency between the external imported XML file and the XML generated by FCP upon import and capture. Any idea?

February 9, 2007 at 2:27 pmthats weird … if I choose to reconnect any file I can press the “Locate” button, then in the Reconnect window I can uncheck the “Matched Name Only” option and proceed to choose any Video file … even if I choose a file whose media attributes don’t match the original, then I get a warning which I can ignore by pressing the Continue button and after that I can press Connect.
there must be something else at odds with your situation that I’m not understanding? very strange. is your DAM aware of the existance of the online clip? would it be possible to make it create a batch list which is already linked to the existing media?

February 9, 2007 at 5:54 pmyes weird is the word….I appreciated your time and interest. No the Pictron DAM database has no relationship to any files on-line. I use it as a proxy database to generate batch lists (XML) of particular game highlights we are wanting to edit with. We simply then digitze them from Digibeta. Each FCP is direct attached storage currently so I am hoping to eliminate redundent captures of clips and begin preparations for a SAN infrastructure next year. Interesting bit of info…..the XML generated by Pictron works fine for intial capture but not for re-connect, however, if I change the
line to before I import to re-connect it allows me to connect the files with a bunch of “non-critical errors” (like adding 8 tracks of audio). If I change the Pictron XML with the above change prior to capture it loses all media start and media end TC information. I don’t know much about XML code but it seems it could be a simple line of code that is conflicting. Anyway, so far Pictron nor Apple have been able to provide a solution. If anyone can look at XML files and be able to find the discrepencies I would be glad to send them to you. Rick Price

i figure the sites auto formatting may have stripped some important info out of your last post.
send me an email with the missing info and an example xml or two and i’d be happy to take a look, though I’m considerably less than expert with this stuff, so can’t guarantee any kind of result!my email is in my profile
cheers
