  • XML problems fcp to PP 5.5 – sub-timeline issue?

Posted by Mark Palmos on July 7, 2011 at 9:38 am

    Hello guys,

I am trying to convert all my FCP projects to PP. At the moment I am still on Mac, but will be on PC by the end of next week.

Some xml exports happen ok, others miss out huge quantities of the edits, including things like not importing the audio of interview clips despite the fact the audio and video are from the same media.

I have tried importing one sequence at a time, and these are not very complex sequences at all… quite simple really… a string of sound bites separated by some title slates. The translation results report that is created just listed problems with importing the graphics, and nothing about the missing audio. The graphics are ALL in sub-timelines… which is probably what causes the problem. Deleting all the sub timeline bits in FCP and exporting that xml file allows the timeline to be accurately exported (without the deleted bits of course)

Seems like sub timelines are not exported, and cause other stuff to be missing, not just the sub timelines themselves.

Another xml export was successful and I was VERY surprised to find even .motn graphics on my sequence had been imported and played fine in PP.

    Hey Mark,

If there’s no other solution a possible workaround may be to export the sub-timelines as separate sequences and then nest them in the master sequence in Premiere.

    Hey there David,

Ja, I would do that if I KNEW i was going to work on these projects, but I am doing the safe thing and trying to convert ALL my projects done in the last 6 months… that way if a client suddenly wants a tweak, I am ok… but it may be a LOT faster and OK to keep my Macbook Pro for FCP tweaks and sell my 8core MacPro (dirt cheap)

BTW I decided on an i7 990x system ith gtx 580 and 24gb ram and SSD system drive, very fast and not too expensive.

    Cheers mate,
    Mark.

Should work well. Make sure you’ve got decent cooling. Low noise will be the tricky thing. I’d investigate all options on this before pulling the trigger. Also google any issues with your 3rd party i/o drivers and your motherboard manufacturer.

    Hi there David,
Well, the combination of the Asus P6X58D-E mobo and the processor are pretty common, I took advice from advice given to someone else on the Adobe forum, some hardware guru guy there. By IO, I assume you mean my Kona LhE? If so, I have not used the Kona for over 2 years… so will sell it with my MacPro.
Im really excited about the prospect..
    Cheers mate,
    Mark.

So you don’t need I/o? That would make you a lucky man.

    lol, yep, seriously… I don’t do broadcast…
I lent someone my DVCAM deck a couple of years ago and have not bothered getting it back.
voice overs? recorded on my EX-1 with external rode mic,
output, never to tape, not for many years.

so even though the Lhe may work on the system, I would prefer AIR in the box than another card doing pretty much nothing other than heating it up 😉

    What do you output to?
