  • xlr’s output static to monitors

so, by reading up on the manual i’ve come to realize that the xlr’s are digital and will not work with analog. so, my behringer mixer and m-audio speakers that i purchased today must be analog, since i tried plugging into both and got nothing but static. well, at least i know i’m not going crazy after i rtfm and such. my question is, how should i monitor audio via the digital xlr’s? would i need a digital mixer? sounds like it. i like the affordability of the behringer i bought but it would make no sense in regards to how much i spent on the g5 and kona 2. what do you guys recommend i do? right now i just ran some trs cables into the back of the monitors with an adapter into the built-in audio jack in the g5. works for the time being until i figure out what i should do exactly.

    thanks,
    ryan

get yourself an audio da such as a flying cow made by m audio. it’ll convert your digital audio to analog.

AJA has also just released (or is about to release) the ADA4 audio converter which would work for your needs as well.

If you have a K-Box you get two RCA analog outs for monitoring. The K-box costs 299.99. Also, you do not have to use a 24 bit box off of the digital outputs, I use a very high quality Spectral DtoA converter and it does a really nice job. The flying cow is 24bit but I have heard that it does not use the best of 16to24bit converters so I wenr with a very good quality 16bit converter.

If you are using powred M-Audio speakers you will not hear teh dynamic ranger difference between 16 and 24bit and if you are coming out of an analog mixer to an analog device it will be hard to descern the difference between 16 and 24 bit.

If you just want audio monitoring you buy a flying cow or look for a really good 16bit dtoa converter for a good price on e-bay.

Here are two options I have been using without incident: if you don’t want to blow the hundreds of dollars on Flying Cows or the new AJA product [which I haven’t looked into yet], you could use your DVCam, DBeta or HD deck as a D/A by hardwiring the AES K2 outputs to the AES inputs of the deck, then normalling the analog output of the deck to your mixer for your playback monitors [I use this method for monitoring 4-trk programming]. This is a less than ideal situation since you would have to be careful about creating a feedback loop, but it would work in a pinch.

If you don’t have a digital deck to use as a D/A, then you can use an Edirol UA1A USB input/output device. It connects to your USB port and provides a conversion from digital to analog audio with RCA stereo outputs and inputs. This has worked well for me for regular stereo programs and for recording scratch audio from a mic via mixer. My UA1A output is connected to a patch bay that allows normalling into the mixer for playback, then the subs of the mixer routed back to the patch bay for output to vhs or 3/4″. This prevents feedback too. I have experience no a/v sync problems at all this way, and no computer noise or crappy stereo mini plug noise. The FCP settings can be toggled from USB output to K2 digital output in a snap.

I admit I’m being a cheapskate, but if it works and there’s no one else that needs to deal with it but you, then it’s an option.

To repeat, and emphasize what has already been said – AJA makes the K-Box for the AJA Kona 2 (for $299) that specifically has RCA unbalanced analog audio outputs, that are designed to go into your Behringer Analog mixer. You take an RCA to 1/4″ TRS stereo phone plug cable, and plug that into your Behringer mixer line inputs (you can also use a RCA to 1/4″ mono Tip Sleeve phone plug). This is ideal and inexpensive for monitoring purposes. All the other suggestions (the assorted D-A’s all work), but the “AJA designed solution” is to use the K-Box.

great advice guys. i’ve been meaning to get the kbox as an addon and it looks like i can kill two birds with the kbox. didn’t know that i could just hook up my deck. might do that for the time being. great tip. i also came across a rack mountable behringer a/d d/a converter that seems to be sufficient. anyone have any experience with it?
