XLR to 3.5 mm
Posted by James Navarro on April 6, 2010 at 9:32 pmHello,
I was wondering if it is possible to use my shotgun mic from my Sony pd-170 on my Canon T2i. Is it possible to connect my shotgun mic XLR to 3.5 mm and hook it up to my Canon? I’m still new to this all, so I have no idea if this will work. All the shotgun mics I’ve seen take batteries. Thanks in advance!

April 6, 2010 at 9:58 pmno what you need is a microphone preamp with phantom power. Preamps made by Beachtek and JuicedLink are you’re best bests. Connect the shotgun to the preamp, switch on phantom power, adjust levels and plugin the 3.5mm output into the camera.
Some onboard preamps even allow you to override AGC

April 6, 2010 at 11:01 pmYou’ll do better with an outboard audio recorder like the Zoom. Much better audio quality, better control over levels and more mic input flexibility.

April 8, 2010 at 12:44 pmHi James,
I’m part owner of the company Oomagamma, we make audio gear along with microphones. All the better quality shotgun mics are phantom powered, so you’ll need a source for that. The shotguns with batteries are usually very low output to keep them from being noisy as they use multipliers to pump 1.5v to what the capsule needs.
We’re making some stuff that would do what you’re asking for.
Please take a look at The Phantom Box (TPB18) it provides phantom power to the XLR mics as well as connects to an EP jack for the 550D/t2i.
The Zoom H2 is a great recorder, we’ve modified it to take XLR’s through out phantom powered box.
Let me know if you have any queries,
All the best,
