    Here’s my problem:

I have a Canon XL-1 with a dead fire wire port. The repair shop I called said that Canon no longer makes this replacement part, but they still might be able to repair it. If it can’t be repaired I want to present my bosses with another option.

The Black Magic Pro Intensity extreme seems like a good option (I need the thunderbolt connectivity). But the Xl-1 only has s video and composite connections on the back. So here’s my question: Do I need to buy a converter box to capture from the XL to the intensity, or can I use my dvd/vcr combo as a converter. Connect the camera to the vcr/dvd, and the dvd/vcr to the intensity to via hdmi or competent.

Will that work? or is there another option?

The SVHS and the composite output works by analog on the Intensity card and Intensity Extreme or thunderbolt works with everything. You have to get a sony mini cable like the headphone plugs and look for 1 mini to 3 rca cables. Usually ships with the camera.
