  • XH-A1 HDV footage won’t capture

Posted by Joseph Dono on October 2, 2009 at 7:01 am

I’ve done everything I could to import footage from the XH-A1

I’m set to easy set up HDV 1080i60 firewire basic and my camera has HD setting set up but question I have is how do I set my playback in the camera to HDV…I believe it already is set to it…

I have the same camera and also had problems initially.
If 1080i60 fireware basic is not working try setting it to just 1080i60 firewire then swapping it back again.
Obviously check your tape actually is HDV and not DV.

You can change some of the greyed out settings only when the firewire cable is not connected. So disconnect, change and try again.

You’ll get it in the end. I thought i had a broken camera/cable at first it took me so long to get it working. Now it works every time and i wonder what my initial problem was.

    Good luck.

What do you mean by check the tape is HDV, I bought a stack of DV tapes. So you mean that there is a tape just for HDV not DV… Is this what you are saying, my FCP settings are correct I think its my settings in the camera please help.

You have to set the playback standard to HDV, by default it is set to auto.

That means in the camera menu of course. It doesn’t matter what your easy setup is, as long as your AV settings are set right for how you want to capture.

I have a Sony HDV and this is what I had to do hope it’s the same with your model.
Before you connect your ilink make sure in your Camcorder menu that the HDV setting is set to component out,Do not leave any setting on that converts HDV to anything else.
Turn your camcorder off, connect the ilink to your Mac run FCP with the HDV settings than turn on camcorder once the tape is in you should have tape control.

    Take care

Did you ever solve this problem? I just got the XH A1 and I have a project deadline coming up. I am able to control the camera through the controls in FCP, but the camera will not show up on the preview and it will not allow any footage to be captured. Please help me!

Hi Jacob Follow the steps I indicated above on this thread of email and you should be able to capture, provided there are no other issues.

When I set the HDV settings in Final Cut and on the XH A1 and open the log and capture windows it says “Unable to locate device”? Any idea?

Did you follow the steps on your Camcorder Unplug ilink to set it to component out in the menu and be in HDV mode turn off Camera plug your ilink then turn on your Camera, you should see the video in FCP any step left out it would not reset your Camera and you will not work.
