I’m editing a feature shot on the Sony XDCAMHD, starting later in the month. There will likely be 30 disks shot at the HQ setting by the time all is said and done. I had planned to work at HDV bitrate (3.2Mbps) so I don’t need terrabytes of disk space to store everything in it’s raw 35mbps state. Is there a way to use the Sony Transfer software but bring in the footage at a different setting? Of course in the end I will want to consolidate the final project and “redigitize” it at the full 35mbps bitrate. Will this work with the Transfer software or am I better to bring in the footage traditionally using the HDSDI on my Kona LHe?

    much thanks.

    Umm…

HDV is 25 Mb/s, which off the top of my head is something like 3.2 MB/s- bits vs Bytes. I’m making a rough calculation that you’ll need around 480 GB of storage for 30 hours of footage at 35Mb/sec (around 4.4 MB/sec). Unless you’re planning on conforming as 1080 uncompressed, you should be very comfortable 1TB of disk space.

Colour me stupid me on that one. But colour me happy for being able to work at full resolution as well…

That’s the beauty of some of the newer codecs. You don’t need to offline if you’re working with DVCPro HD or XDCam HD.
