  • XDCAM transfer issue with data rate

Posted by Tony Davies on March 10, 2011 at 7:21 am

Wonder if anyone can help ? We are trying to ingest XDCAM HD422 1080i50 CBR clip[s to FCP using XDCAM Transfer v 2.12.

The transfer seems to behave as normal but the clips look awful. These are NOT the proxy files as we have checked clip properties and all is as it should be, apart from the fact that the Data Rate is showing 6.5 Mbps rather than the 50Mbps I was expecting which the native files are.

We have checked all the preferences in XDCAM TRansfer and thy seem to be OK. Am I right in thinking thst the Capture Presets in Audio/Video settings should not make any difference to the Log & Transfer operation or to the XDCAM transfer operation ?

    Any suggestions gratefully received.

They dont show Mb/s in FCP.
    They show MB , Megabytes/s
Thats the correct datarate of a 50 Mb clip.
    Your datarates are fine.

    And call your cameraman.
And describe what you think is awful here.
    Its long gop interlaced footage.
Are you judging on proper broadcast monitor?
Xdcam transfer didnt screw up. Im sure

Thanks Paul. Utterly baffled as to why the material looks so soft. We have viewed it on a monitor direct from the camervand it looks fine

Thanks again Paul. Cameraman is here with me. Definitely OK on a broadcast monitor. Perhaps I will de-interlace and have a look.

How are you viewing it in FCP? You write t looks fine direct from camera to broadcast monitor, so is it soft on the same monitor from FCP, or are you only looking at it on the computer monitor?

I shudder at interlaced recording personally, I prefer shooting progressive. Were you shooting the Standard Quality or the Hi quality?

Thanks for the help paul. I went so far down the wrong road with trying to figure out what was wrong that I ended up arriving at the right conclusion, which is that I am an idiot. The reason the cli[s didn’t look right was so stupendously simple, basic, obvious and plain to anyone with half a brain that I am embarrassed to say what it was (bit it does involve the letters i and p)

Steven, thanks I have realised what an idiot I was being. I can only blame it on jet lag and stupidity but you hit the nail on the head with your question about i and p.

Please Help I am having EXACTLY the same issue, (except I’m dealing with XDCAM 1080i50 35mb/s with Final cut 7)

    What was the problem?

    Please help.

    Regards,

    Complete idiot…

Mate, I am ashamed to admit it but we were watching our interlaced XDCAM footage on our Mac Book progressive screen. As I said, I can only blame jet lag, stupidity and too much beer.
