The write back software (XDCAM Transfer 2.9) has been on the UK site for a couple days now. It’s still not available on the US site though. Not sure what the delay is here in the US.

The US XDCam “minisite” has not been updated with a link specific to XDCam Transfer v2.9.0. However, if you follow the link to their support area where you download the software from, you will see that it IS available. This update allows write-back of MXF files to the clip folder on XDCam discs on the U1 via a Mac. Be aware, you have to have an Intel machine to do this (no PowerPC support based on what I read) and OS 10.5.6.

Here’s the link to the XDCam Transfer downloads page:

Also be aware that the size of the XDCAM disc “general” folder is still limited to 500 Mbytes. This won’t be updated for the PDW-U1 until the middle of the year (according to our Sony insider).

I had to download the software from the sony UK site to get it to work. Could only get the drive software from the usa site. What a pleasure to be able to name disks!

I have heard this for almost two years, now… I’m not so sure that Sony is ever going to do this. Myself and a colleague have been in touch with Sony about this for the past three years.

Can you imagine what this would mean to P2 users – being able to store their precious data on XDCAM discs?

    I cerainly can.

they can do it now by burning the p2 folders to dual-layer BD-R though.

I would do that instead if it were me. Sony is really moving like a slug
    on this drive.

We’ve been doing just this for now… But I’m not too impressed with the protection of a simple plastic case for the disc. I would feel much more comfortable with the XDCAM disc for backup.

    That’s a serious understatement…
