  • XDCAM Multicam Edit on a Macbook Pro

So I’ve recently been assigned a two camera multicam edit that was shot on XDCAM, and I’m wondering if my Macbook can handle it. It’s a 2.4 GHz, dual core, with 4 GB of RAM. Do you think that will be enough? Would converting to ProRes help? It’s kind of a time sensitive project, so would one of those be faster than the other? Thanks for your help!

As far as I’m aware the Macbook Pro should be fine and if you’re using the XD plugin then all will be well, however I would use a separate drive to handle all the footage, especially if you’re going to colour correct.

As far as pro res is concerned, it’s pretty much always the way to go.

    Hi,

your MBP will handle it, as long as you have fast enough drives. Hopefully you have a 17″ and can hook up esata via 3/4 PC card. I used such a setup, multicam on a 2 hours theatre play with no problem, using the excellent Sonnet F2 drive.

    Hope this helps,

Ok, that’s very good to hear. However, if I had to choose between an external Firewire drive, and my computer’s internal HD, which would you recommend? Thanks for your help!

You need an external to run the scratch disk on, if you run your scratch on your internal boot, FCP will run like a pig in treacle. If the MBP has an esata connection then you can get a sata drive and everything will be good. Otherwise go for FW which as I say is better than running everything on your internal.
