XDCAM materials on portable HDD
Posted by Christopher Tay on July 28, 2007 at 9:24 amHi,
Is it possible to someone to copy XDCAM materials into a portable Firewire HDD and then I use that HDD to import into my FCP system ?
I’ve done this with P2 materials so just need to know if I can do the same with XDCAM materials.
Also, do I still need to use the Sony XDCAM Transfer Software to import the materials in FCP 6 or can I import in directly using FCP 6’s Log and Transfer ?
Thanks,
-chrispy

if you have Flip4Mac’s MXF component you can do this, but Sony’s XDCAM Transfer application currently only imports from an attached XDCAM device
afaik Log and Transfer wont do it as its expecting to find P2/AVCHD formated data structure, never tried it though

July 28, 2007 at 5:35 pmConnect your Mac laptop to the camera or deck in FAM mode and use the Sony Transfer software. This will import XDCAM-HD clips as QT movies to a target folder (your external drive). That can be copied later to your desktop storage and imported into FCP by Import>Folder. No need to have FCP installed on the laptop.

On the P2, I’ve successfully copied the CONTENTS folder from the P2 store into my internal HDD and then use FCP 6’s Log and Transfer to navigate to the folder to import the materials. You cannot rename the CONTENTS folder so if you need to identify the contents, just put it into another folder.
Thanks for the tip on transferring to QT clips first using the Sony Transfer Software. That made alot of sense. The only thing is that without FCP installed, will we be able to transfer it to the XDCAM IMX format ?

July 29, 2007 at 5:48 amif you have the XDCAM Transfer software installed then you can import the files. It will work standalone for connection to XDCAM devices, import of proxies, browsing and logging the proxies, and import via FAM of full res media, either full clips or partial clips as logged. It does not depend on FCP.

This is possible with the use of the PDZK-P1 Transfer App from Sony, as long as you keep the entire file structure of the ProDisk in tact when you copy the files over. However, this method adds an extra step to the transfer process, and in my opinion is truly a waste of time, especially if you already have access to either an XDCAM camera or deck. I had to use this copy method for my first project due to our XDCAM equipment being on loan, which had to be returned quickly.
The Transfer App will allow you to “add” a folder, but will only properly read that folder if the original file structure was maintained.
