XDCAM latest status
Over the years I’ve been suspicious of the way Premiere handles Sony XDCAM formats. Particularly the ways darks and highlights are handled. Clips can look rubbish if the Lumetri Blacks slider is slid left. So what I did was to leave the black slider at 0 (center) and it got passable results.
I just got “The Cool Stuff in Premiere Pro”, a very good book by the way, and it contains a statement “The Lumetri Color Engine had a fundamental flaw up until 2017.1” and mentions it particularly XDCAM (page 458). Thanks Adobe!
Another thing it spells out is Lumetri controls expect REC.709. I’m interested in what happens if essence does not conform to this exactly.
The obvious type are the Sony Hyper Gammas. Are they a flavor of REC.709 ? What does Premiere do in this case ? Is it fixed in 2017.1?
I’ve always been worried about how Premiere copes with 4.2.2 color subsampling. It doesn’t seem to mention that anywhere in the documentation. For example does it pass thru 4.2.2 or map it to 4.2.0?
It would be great if Premiere gave an error or warning if it is enable to process a clip.
