XDCAM import to other than uncompressed
Posted by Jean Baillargeon on June 24, 2007 at 4:39 pmIs there any way to import XDCAM HD footage to FCP in a lower resolution than uncompressed HD, for example import so I can cut into a NTSC DV 48khz Standard Definition. The only way I fugured out now is to simply digitize as though I’m diggin regular tape through composite connections. But that can’t be right…
Any thoughts appreciated…
Thanks

Sony created a XDCam ingest plugin that allows you to work with the Native (compressed) XDcam files. Why aren’t you using that. or the Flip 4 Mac version?

June 25, 2007 at 9:00 am… for file transfer? No. The idea of the tapeless workflow revolves around the principle of shooting and then editing with the native footage. With XDCAM HD you are shooting to Sony’s MPEG HD format. The transfer software is just moving the raw media from the XDCAM disc to your media drive. There is no transcoding.
Yes, you can also capture as DV via AV/C mode, or similarly, via the HD/SD SDI / Composite outputs of the deck, if you have one, and thence to an IO card or device that will transcode to a different codec of your choosing.
Or you can batch recompress all your ingested media to a different codec using Media Manager, Compressor, or an alternative dedicated application.

Sorry… I looked on Sony’s site for the lug in you mentionned… couldn’t find anything relating… can you be more specific…
As well… I thought the only media on XDCAM disks was uncompressed except for the proxy files which I can’t use in FCP or maybe I can and just don’t know how to do
Thanks for the advice…

June 25, 2007 at 2:54 pmHey
I was already do the SDI out capture to a dv codec… I wanted to know if there was a more streamlined way of just accessing the XDCAM data. You mentioned using the media manager to recompress to another codec. Does the timecode data stay the same across the rrepcompress cause I tried exporting the uncompressed files to another codec and timecode did not track across…
thanks
