    Hello!

I am preparing myself to work with XDCAM files and the PDW U1 drive. So i have a question about this workflow. I did a research on the internet and it seems quite simple so far: Connect it with – in my case – the Mac and go for it. But i really would like to know what is exactly going to happen then? Will the the files be automatically converted to .mxf and copied in the “Avid MediaFiles” directory? How do i handle them and finally export them? Anyone has made experiences so far?

    Cheers,
    David

You need to download the U1 driver software, as well as the Sony XDCAM AMA plugin. They will not be automatically copied. AMA will generally automatically link to the files. From there, you can transcode them to your offline format. In my case, we’ve been transcoding them to 8:1m for offline.

This is a particularly useful tutorial on the basic XDCAM workflow with AMA. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABQ4uaEDSgc

From past experience with the PDW U1, I would rather copy the XDCAM disc (the whole disc) to a drive then access.
We had some issues with AMA not recognizing the same disc during re-ingest.
Got rid of the PDW and stayed with the bigger XDCAM decks.

    Thanks Richard, thanks Eric!
So i am not going to use the proxy method, but work with the full-res material. Is there a chance to wrap the data from the disc into a .mxf file?

Yes. Follow the tutorial, except instead of consolidating the proxy by selecting “Most Compressed” in your AMA Consolidation settings, set it to “Highest Quality”
