XDCAM HD422 1080i50 to H264 1080p for WD TV HD Mediaplayer
Hi,
we are using the WD HD players in combination with Sony LED TV’s for our clients. With sublime results.
The only problem is that those WD players only playout at 1080p. We shoot and edit everything in XDCAM HD422 1080i50. Has anyone any ideas of making the best possible H264 for playback? And what the best way would be to make 1080i50 into 1080p?Thanks!

Koen,
The best solution is to shoot and edit full Progressive.
Everything will go faster and things will look better.
Working interlaced and de-interlacing afterward will take longer and won’t look as good.

One bizarre thing I’ve experience with these boxes is AAC audio codec doesn’t play back smoothly. I’ve had some very strange issues with combined AAC and h264 playback. Each independently plays fine, but both together, audio cuts out.
I’d love to talk with you about your experiences with that box. I’ve been really impressed with it, I pushed a 50Mbps h264 1920 file through it, which I believe is higher than Blu-Ray can handle.

thanks for the responses! Jason,we never had a problem wit the AAC audio, but you might consider to try the firmware update. Maybe this could solve your problem, i noticed it plays things smoother after the update.
As for the progressive thing, Rafael, we are mainly a broadcast company so the switch to progressive workflow is not really an option. We provide stories that have been first broadcasted on commercial TV to our customers for exhibits and showrooms.
I already tried de-interlacing and output to progressive in mpeg streamclip but the movements aren’t what they really schould be. A steady shot on the other hand looks really amazing, I also heard its better than Blu Ray, you’re right Jason.
Yesterday i threw a QT reference in Compressor and tried to make a H264 with the frame controls ON, set to progressive. But it just doesn’t work, Compressor didn’t move a thing just yet…. It was a short sample, about 1 minute, on a 2year old MacPro…
How dou you make the clips, Jason?
Any thoughts? Things I could try?

my WDTV Audio/Video settings allow for 1080i @ 50 – 60 – and 23.976Hz
As well as progressive matching options. Quick picture of my options:

One point of clarification…there are different models of this box. I have one at home and one at work that have slightly different options.
Additionally, there is a WDTV Live box that the most recent firmware (1.03.49) fixed “…MP4 problems with seeking and audio stopping”
The box I have had the most recent firmware update as 1 year ago (v1.03). My guess is that they have abandoned that box for their newer latest and greatest model.
