XDCAM HD & FCP – Export Help Needed
Posted by Carlsonke on July 2, 2007 at 3:52 amWe’re editing on FCP6 and have a newly acquired XDCAM HD (F350). Importing directly from the camera has not been a problem, but for some reason, exporting a sequence or EDL (or anything!) back to the camera doesn’t seem to work.
Our import/export is “XDCAM HD 1080p24 VBR” but it says “preset not installed on this system” yet we imported in this preset, so I’m not sure what the problem is.
Any suggestions? We’re normally Avid users.

July 2, 2007 at 11:28 amHave you downloaded the free Sony Transfer software? Most XDCAM users have this installed to work in conjunction with XDCAM-HD clips. This will also help you with logging, since that function can be done with the proxies on another computer without the need to dump to DVDs with burn-in, etc. There are separate Mac and PC utilities and they have different functions.
Also – which bitrate did you use? XDCAM-HD is 18Mb/s VBR, 25Mb/s CBR or 35Mb/s VBR. The 18 and 35 work together (both VBR) and that’s the XDCAM-HD preset, but the 25 rate works in the HDV presets (listed as HDV, not XDCAM-HD). Overcranked footage (in-camera slomo) will be an odd case. This footage when shot at the 35Mb/s setting is actually 18Mb/s and is rewrapped with an Apple codec on import rather than treated as native. It will have to be rendered when cut onto the timeline.
I think Apple has a white paper you can download on XDCAM workflow that might help.

I’m not shooting or editing that particular flavor, nor am I yet playing with FCP6 so I’m not sure I can be much help other than to point out the Cow has a forum specific for XDCAM issues and the like … it shares space with the Sony CineAlta forum and you may find others who can help there. that said, stand by your beds whilst everyone else flocks in to answer our question here!
you’ll also find a very helpful knowledgebase in the dvinfo XDCAM HD CinaAlta forumcheers

July 2, 2007 at 2:51 pmI, too, am having troubles with exporting XDCAM HD. I’m exporting 1080i60 (35m/bps). My issue seems to be that we haven’t had the time to fully convert over to XDCAM HD and Motion 3 doesn’t do non-square projects very well at all – I use Motion to create in ProRes422 and then render in FCP6.
Anyway… My issue is when will Sony come out with a newer version that is FULLY compatible with FCS2?
I can’t even export to XDCAM IMX50 anymore, either!

July 2, 2007 at 3:14 pmreally? so XDCAM Transfer, specifically Export > Sony XDCAM… is not working in FCP6?
the new version of XDCAM Transfer is slated for September with the release of the PDW-U1

July 2, 2007 at 3:22 pmI’m not sure if it’s a problem with FCP6, which I understand still has some bugs, or the XDCAM. But it does me no good to do an offline edit when I can’t take the finished product out of the computer to online!
Does anyone know what settings would have to be changed in FCP? We’re already using the appropriate preset as our default, but it doesn’t seem to matter.

July 2, 2007 at 3:29 pmWell…. It works but not completely.
We lost IMX50 output, audio setup is really odd at times, and output times are much higher than before (but this may be an issue with the newer Mac Pro systems).

July 17, 2007 at 4:22 pmI posted a workaround that should solve some of your problems on the CineAlta forum:
