  • XDCAM EX workflow in Vegas 10

I’ve been working with Vegas for some time now and I’ve always had a problem with projects containing M2T files (hang ups, crashes etc).

Then, after I bought Canon 5D, I started to work with MOV H264 files which also gave me headaches when the project was longer then a few minutes.

Recently I’ve discovered Cineform Neoscene which completly changed the situation making it so easy and efficient (no crashes, no hang ups, excellent workflow) to work with the troublesome formats but..

I just got native files from SONY XDCAM EX3 to edit and I found Neoscene can’t convert them. The project is big – there is 15 hours of footage and the final render is going to exceed 1 hour (the project will also contain files from Canon 5D which I converted to Neoscene).

The question is: should I convert SONY XDCAM EX3 files to some intermediary format or just drop them onto the timeline and not worry about anything? I am worried that a big project with native XDCAM footage will start to crash after a while.

I got a decent PC and Sony Vegas Pro 10.

    thanks for answer

No worries. Vegas edits XDCAM like butter. In fact, people who are too cheap to buy NeoScene often use XDCAM as their digital intermediary (even though it’s not one). Just edit the files straight of of your camera.

Yeah what John said. While I’ve never had 10 hours of XDCAM EX footage in one timeline, I have had about 6 and Vegas 9 had no problem with it. Now I’m on Vegas 10 and it seems okay with Canon 1080p mov’s, so I don’t even bother with Neoscene anymore, although I haven’t needed to put more than 30 minutes of that kind of footage in yet.

Another option is to use the Content Management Software that comes with the EX3 and create an MXF wrapper, which literally takes seconds. In my case, I just wanted the files in 1 stream, not 10’s of small files. Vegas 9/10 loves MXF files and they are a breeze to edit when compared to AVCHD, even when using the Ultimate S multi-cam plugin.

Thanks guys. I’ve just started working with native MP4 files from XDCAM and they work perfect.
