I’m new to the whole xdcam thing, and had the opportunity to edit on a 17″ macbook pro with 4gigs of RAM some xdcam ex footage. We imported it via log and transfer to the xdcam ex codec. The timeline is also the xdcam ex codec. So all is well until you have to render. Given, the footage is full 1920x1080i, but even just a dissolve brings up the conforming window and can take minutes to render. And if you have a garbage matte and a color correction on 5 minutes of video it can take 45minutes.

Seems ridiculously long. On 720p P2 footage on the MacPro I’m used to renders of this sort taking 5-10 minutes, not 45.

Should we be importing as Pro Res and using a Pro Res sequence?

[Bret Williams] “even just a dissolve brings up the conforming window “

Sounds like you might be inadvertently rendering the whole timeline rather than just the transition or area of focus … make sure under your Sequence menu > Render menu’s you are not choosing to render “Full” quality playback area’s, or select the area you want to render and use the Render Selection option

Well, yes you could but you’d lose the advantage of the tapeless workflow and the low data rate of the native codec …. you might get better mileage simply by changing your Sequence menu > Settings … >> Render codec to ProRes 422. That way you enjoy all the benefits of native codec editing and the speed and quality advantage of an FCP optimized I-frame 422 render codec

Thanks. We have “full” checked as you would with normal dv or p2 stuff.

Another Q. We’re not getting sound in the log and transfer tool on both the mac pro and the MacBook pro. The mac pro has a Kona 3.
