    Hi there

I am about to shoot and cut a 5-cam shoot on Sony XDCAM EX. Its a music performance.

    My edit setup-

    Mac Pro 8x Core
    9GB RAM
    FCP 6
FW800 hard drives or 1x SATA II internal (yeh… boo..)
    AJA IO HD
    ATI Radeon X1900XT
SD Monitor (Boo.. yeh will use AJA IO to downconvert for viewing…)

I am assuming that without a RAID device one can not edit a 5 cam XDCAM multiclip. Therefor I want to do an SD offline then online to ProRes HQ 1080 and finish on HDCAM tape for TV broadcast.

Can anyone suggest the workflow? Im thinking this- please correct me!

    1. Shoot in 35mbps on all cameras
    2. ingest footage from SAS card to FCP
    3. transcode all footage to DV25 (or prores low quality?) – I can do this in Episode or compressor or should I use FCP?
    4. edit multi cam (I have done 6 cam edits before on 1x FW 800 drive with DV footage)
    5. lock edit
    6. use media manager to export an online project
    7. reconnect media to transcoded pro res HQ HD1080 footage (will timecodes sync up ok if reels are all named accordingly?)
    8. Grade, finish, edit to tape

Does anyone have experience with this workflow?

    Thanks a lot !

I have no direct experience of using xdcam ex,

but I did recently edit multi-clip on my laptop MacBook pro on location with 9 cameras using DVcam (dv25) from XDcam optical discs using the Sony transfer software.

I used a G-raid 1TB FW800 drive, which was fast enough for 9 cameras (plus a couple spare!)
I’d try it and see with EX as 9@25 isn’t too different to 5@35 ! ( does one dv the other mpeg make a difference)

The ingest took for ages (at approx 2.5x RT speed)

I did ultimately have problems flakey fcp due to “excessive” project size, when using nested multiclip sequences.
    Keep your project lean.

The Sony software does import low res video AND audio proxies (mpeg4) , which could be converted to an edit format, then after edit the project batch digitised.

Search this forum for Xdcam and see peoples suggestions when I asked similar questions re XDcam
There was one reply with a suggestion for software to help with a hi-res conform.

    Thanks Steve

I couldnt find posts here about doing the conform.. could you help me out?

Will the media connect up to the correct timecodes from the proxies OK? Any known bugs when multicaming through this route with XDCAM or ProRes specifically?

    cheers
