    Hi all,

I managed to finally find the information I was looking for in my previous post about not having any audio when importing my files from an XDCam EX1 into Premiere. I needed to upgrade my Premiere to v 3.2 from 3.0.

    Now here’s the fun part…

On my laptop I did the upgrade and everything works perfectly. Despite the fact that I recorded audio on tracks 1 & 2, audio shows up in the sequence on track 4 as a stereo pair but at least I can hear it.

So I went ahead and did the upgrade on my office system and using the exact same footage, the audio tracks come in to Premiere on tracks 4 & 5 and I can’t hear anything.

The Premiere install default settings have not been altered at all so it’s basically the exact same factory install so I’m at a loss as to why the footage is behaving differently given that the project settings are identical and the software settings are identical.

    Help!

It’s dropping the audio down to track 4, because the sequence you’re adding them to has the default audio tracks set to stereo (and your imported ones are probably mono). first, clean up your timeline, by right-clicking the audio track column (literally, on the word Audio 1 on the left). Select “Delete tracks…” and check the box that says “Delete Audio Tracks,” and make sure the pull-down menu below it says “All Empty Tracks.”

This will move your track 4 audio up to 1. And your audio mapping should now be feeding it to whatever hardware you use to monitor audio. If not, check the Audio Output Mapping in the Premiere Preferences.

This is all assuming you can see levels in the mixer.

    Hi Chris,

Firstly thanks for the reply. I’ve been struggling with this XDCam/EX1 thing for a few days now and I really appreciate the assistance. I know once I get past these few glitches I’ll be off to the races.

As you suggested I cleaned up all the extra tracks and then set the tracks to mono. That cleared up the channel 4/5 issue however I still have no audio on either track 1 or 2. I can’t even see a waveform on audio 2 which I know has nats sound on it.

I checked the mapping and it would appear that Premiere is mapped to my audio card.

Again, these same files work fine on my laptop. Codec issue?

I did notice, however, that while the settings appear to be the same on both systems, when I bring the clip into the sequence on the laptop, Premiere seems smart enough to know that there was no audio recorded on channel 1 and just shows channel 2 on the timeline. On my office system where I’m having the problem, using the exact same clip it shows two channels of audio, 1 & 2, but both seem to be empty.

If the waveform is flat-lined, Premiere did not import any audio at all (which is probably codec related). If you could post a short clip on an FTP site, I’ll take a look at it.

    Hi Chris…

Did I mention I really appreciate the time you’re taking for this?

I’ve placed a short clip with audio on my FTP server at the following IP: 96.30.197.7

    Anonymous login, no password.

    Thanks.

Alright. I have audio coming in a single track, as a stereo channel (nat audio only on right). It’s easy to fix, but complicated to explain (especially if it isn’t working correctly on your one system). Shoot me an email at chris@knight3d.com, as I would prefer to talk you through this over the phone.
