    Hey all

I need to pose a question to Avid users who are familiar with an XDCAM workflow. Was working on a shoot today with some first-time tapeless videographers, they’ve been using BetaCam for years. Anyways, they edit with Avid, but I’m used to FCP. The producer wants to review the footage with XDCAM Clip Browser, note subclips to be used and pass that info onto the editor, who would then use Clip Browser to capture the specified clips using a list of Ins/Outs.

They’re used to the editor being able to batch capture using the metadata delivered (Ins/Outs) from the producer. My question is how might they accomplish this using XDCAM footage? They would rather not have to search through each clip and individually set in/out points for each subclip.

My suggestion to them was for the producer to simply create the subclips instead of just noting them, and pass those files onto the editor.
Thoughts? Thanks a bunch for your insight! The more I work with them, the more I’m going to be working with Avid.

The producer can lay out the sub clips in a time line using the PDZ-1 software. Export an edl, import the edl inot Avid, decompose the SEQ (adding handles) and digitize. This workflow assumes a PDW- HD1500 player and a DX box to digitize. The right workflow for your situation depends on what hardware you have available and what version of MC you’re running.

Awesome, thanks for your answer. I’m not sure what they’re working with, but I’ll ask. This might be what they’re looking for.
    I’ll check back in.

Here is what they are using:

Avid Media Composer Vers. 2.8.1 w/ Mojo SD
    Dell Dual Xeon 2.8 Ghz
    4 GB Ram
    XP Service Pack 2

I don’t believe they have a player or DX box. They just got a new Avid Nitris system.
Thanks for the suggestion, Gary. PDZ looks like the answer. Are the player and DX box necessary for this?

Nope. You can import the files instead.

I’ve been told that this software is used with Sony’s Optical Disc recording only. Ideal for the PDW 700 or 800.
Will it also do the job for the PMW 350? I apologize, it was rather stupid of me not to include the model of camera in the original post.

The directory structure on the disc is the same regardless of the camera. This means that you can use the PDZ-1 software with any of Sony’s optical disc cameras. The 700 & 800 cameras are simply Sony’s recent additions tho the XDCAM line up

But the 350 doesn’t use an optical disc to record to. It uses SnS cards.
