XDCAM as a storage medium
Hi
I’m looking to back-up about 20GB of projects from an Editshare server, so I can make some room.
We have a Sony XDCAM reader (PDW-U1) and I was thinking of putting these projects onto an XDCAM disc. I’ve heard others discussing how great a storage medium these things can be.
I can’t however, even begin to figure out how to go about this. It’s not like I can just format the disc and use windows to copy files (Because I tried!) and I can’t see any suitable options in our XDCAM software.
Do I have to find a different application online?

I’d suggest not- too proprietary a format and too expensive of media to waste the time. If you’re not able to invest in a true archival medium such as an LTO drive, just use external hard drives. Far more flexible and compatible than XDCAM media and arguably as durable…

Funnily enough, I’ve contemplated the LTO.
But it was only 20GB and seemed like a waste of all that extra tape space on the LTO.
That and the fact that it’s slightly more ponderous to get something back off the tape if the client suddenly decides to work on a 2008 project; as they are, unfortunately, wont to do!
I have a huge 2TB Lacie which I’ve already backed them up to, but a co-worker is extremely mistrustful of this as a back up means and insists I look into XDCAM.

Another alternative- 32/64GB USB Flash drives are cheap, fast, compact and far more durable than any magnetic hard drive.
