  • XDCAM AMA vs XDCAM MXF: Best for performance?

I am editing from a large number of XDCAM EX clips in MC6. The clips were originally ingested via FCP, so they are Quicktimes I’m linking to via AMA, but I hear there is a performance hit to using AMA. So I could transcode to XDCAM MXF, which simply rewraps the XDCAM so no quality loss, or I could also transcode to DNxHD 36 for an offline.

So my question is: Which format should I use for best performance and stability during the offline edit? Stick with AMA, rewrap to XDCAM MXF, or transcode to DNxHD36?

I rewrap it in MXF and get WAY better performance in MC. Thumbnails alone appear almost instantly, whereas with just AMA linking it takes awhile to populate the bin. Remember to change your media creation settings to XDCAM 50mbit if you go this route.

Thanks for your input! Converting to MXF as I type this.
