XD, HDV, DV – Best Sequence Setting?
Have a Dual G5 with FCP6…and editing a long format SD project with a mix of footage – XD/HDV in HD and DV/DVCam is SD. Should I use a ProRes SD sequence setting or XDCam HD? But I’m thinking editing in HD, even with the low bit rate of XD will still punish my system..any thoughts?

If your project will be an SD project, then just edit everything in SD. Capture your HDV as DV…your camera and deck can output it as such. Make your life easy.

It’s Sony’s XDCam…HD, but at a bit rate fairly close to DV…and unfortunately most of it and the HDV is already digitized as HD on drives. I’m thinking the best sequence setting would be the NTSC ProRes in 16:9…however, everytime I put a XDCam clip on it, the red render bar appears…one option I haven’t explored would be an XDCam sequence setting in SD…if one exists…thanks, E

If you create an HDV or XDCAM HD sequence (I’d go w/which ever format you have more of) and go to the Sequence settings, under the “render control” tab you can set the sequence to render in ProRes. This will keep any effects or color correction you do in the ProRes codec.

If you drop an HD clip onto an SD timeline, it will require rendering of some sort…but you should be able to do this without the RED render bar.
Is most of your footage HD or SD? If HD, then edit in SD, upconverting the SD footage. And Andrew has your back, set the render control to ProRes so when you render, it will be ProRes. ProRes HD. To get it back down to SD you should get an HD capture card.
