XAVC-I playback performance
So we got a Sony FS7 …as the story goes.
This is our first dipping into 4K, and while “get a faster computer” is the default knee-jerk reaction, it’s my job to explore the options thoroughly and make sure it really can’t be fixed with any configuration tweaks.The machine is a 2009 Nehalem 2.66GHz 8-core Mac Pro with 16GB RAM and GTX570, running OS X 10.8.5. BMD Decklink Extreme 3D+.
1. If we stick to HD timelines, HD output and 1/2 resolution preview is there any hope?
2. What if we get a GTX780ti? Or we’d be wasting our money trying it in that machine?
3. Even with a new 2013 MP, how’s Resolve doing these days handling native Sony XAVC-I MXF files?Thanks!

That is because that format is a pure capture format.
Please transcode to something your editor can work with and you can grade on.

If you are shooting in 4K, working from that source media to achieve a good HD output, some of it will depend on your media drive throughput, but delivering HD, working at Quarter Res (for preview) should be achievable. Then jack it up for output. And go skiing for the afternoon.

Thanks Joseph, forgot to mention that our SAN tests routinely clock at 350MB/s. And I told the new tech that with a couple hours’ worth of work this bay could be upgraded to 550MB/s.
Do you agree with Sascha that Resolve is hopeless in XAVC-I, or not necessarily? I’ll definitely try 4K ProRes to compare the performance (and when the FS7 firmware upgrade that allows ProRes recording finally releases it could be a solution)…
That said, for our facility, transcoding is so 2010. Since we’ve gone to Premiere CC we managed to eliminate most transcode work on the ingest side, which simplified our life so much and allows the assistants to do other and better things; it cuts through HD Long-GOP H.264 like butter. But Resolve, while they claim advanced format support, hasn’t been quite as magical. As far as XAVC-I goes, I was hoping to hear the opposite of what Sascha said, especially with an intra-frame codec.

I have a nMP here and can test it right away from the internal 1000 mb/s flash drive and an old MP with a lot of CUDA powerA slice of color…

I’m editing in Premiere, export EDL or XML to resolve, do the colorcorrection, render one big clip out and place it above my edits in Premiere. If you set the grades to “remote” in resolve then changes are even easier when you export a changed edit again to resolve and the export again a clip with the same filename as the first on.
This way I am always sync between Premiere and Resolve. Of course you can also do a roundtrip by exporting each clip with the same filmename, but I prefer my method.
