I have recorded some 2 hour HD videos using Windows Media Center which generates .WTV files. What is the best way to convert these WTV files into a format that can be used for editing in Vegas ?

You will need to use a WTV converter. The most common format to convert to is probably MPEG2 because that’s the video stream that’s in the WTV file so I would look for a WTV to MPEG2 converter like this one:

    WTV To MPEG Converter 3.6.2.144

I have never used this so I don’t know how well it works but MPEG2 should edit easily in Vegas. BTW, that particular one is not free but it does have a free trial.

Let us know how you make out.
