If you mean write on like cursive then there are several built-in options including: Stroke, Write-On, Paint and Vector Paint.

If you mean type on like a typewriter I suggest you look at text animators.

the topic comes up weekly here and many other AE forums so you can search them for several suggestions. Lots of ways to do this including using the WRITE ON effect in AE.
Your typeface and your need for realism determine which approach we might suggest.
