Writing SGI format files in CS6
Posted by Eric Fitzgerald on May 7, 2013 at 5:05 pmSo I just updated from CS4 to CS6 and it looks like my 3rd party SGI file format plugin doesn’t work. I’ve been saving to the TIFF format and going back to CS4 to write the SGI files, but that is rather tedious.
Anybody know of a SGI plugin for CS6?
TIA
Eric

May 8, 2013 at 5:38 pmAdobe has one:
https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/kb/plug-ins-photoshop-cs61.html
It’s listed as the SGIRGB downloadable. Here’s the download link for several file format type plugins for CS6:

AFAICT Adobe’s SGIRGB only reads the SGI file format. Unless I’m missing something it does not write SGI files.
I need to write them. The old 3rd party plug did that.

May 8, 2013 at 6:58 pmI just installed the extra web plugins from Adobe into Photoshop CS6 Ext on Mac OS X 10.8.3. It allows me to save as “SGI RGB” now. If yours doesn’t, I’m not sure what to say, but I dropped mine in the plugins folder in the PS CS6 folder in Applications and it appears to be working. I don’t use SGI files so I’m not an expert.

May 8, 2013 at 7:14 pmOdd. I’m running OSX 10.6.8 on this macbook pro… Wonder what’s up?
I just tried re-installing the plug and still no joy.

May 8, 2013 at 9:26 pmMaybe try removing the old plugin, restart Photoshop, confirm its not there, quit photoshop, re-download the plugin (from the set of optional plugins) and try dropping the SGIRGB one in the plugins folder again. Could be an OS thing – 10.8 vs. 10.6? Dunno if you want to go updating to Mt. Lion tho. Could be it’s conflicting with your other SGI plugin?

Found this site: https://www.telegraphics.com.au/sw/product/SGIFormat – looks like it only supports up to CS5, though.
Photoshop has had SGI support for a really long time so its a little odd that it wouldn’t work all of a sudden now. I’m sure it’s a simple fix.

May 22, 2013 at 4:47 pmOK, I’ve tried all that on several computers and still no joy.
Even bought a brand new iMac with the latest OS.
SGI is not available as a format to save to. Grr
Thanks for the help anyway.
I’d also like to do 10 bit log conversion to Cineon like in After Effects.

May 22, 2013 at 7:11 pmWell, if the plugin from Adobe isn’t working in CS6 and it’s supposed to, it’s a support issue with Adobe. I hate to say it, but hit the Adobe forums, cuz I’m stumped and it works here. 🙁

May 24, 2013 at 12:48 amJonathan,
I discovered that this plug only works with 8 bit color depth. My CS 4 SGI plug did 16 bit. I guess I’ll have to save as a TIFF and open the doc in CS 4 to save as a 16 bit SGI.
I hate it when they break something in new software.
Thanks for you time.
Eric
