I am trying to work out the best way to create the impression of writing on water.

The scene is a video of an actor facing the camera writing with their finger on a vertical plane of water. The ripples spread out and deform the entire frame.

The intention is to use a plane with a water material and use a bump map to deform the plane.

Creating the bump map is the concern ….. how.

Is there a way to make something like a small sphere move along a path (matched to the actors finger movement) and deform the plane.?

    Is this possible?

There must be a way easier than manual keyframing.

This wont spread the ripples so something extra is needed …but what?

    Your guidance is sort.

    Thanks

If you have AE Pro you should be able to do this with the Wave World plugin.

    Greetings Adam

Life would always be easier with a big bag full of $$$$$……

    Unfortunately I dont have AE.

Are there any “pocket friendly” plugins for C4D that could do this?

There’s a plugin called Add-The-Sea that *might* have this capability, but I’ve never tried it. https://www.motion-gimmick.net/english/index2_e.htm
