    I went through jayse’s Make elements grow tutorial. when I get to the write on part he has me

    Use a mask to outline the path copy the mask and paste it in the write on brush position section.

    everytime I try to paste to brush position it just creates a mask 2 in the mask section. someone have any ideas

    AE is very picky about selecting the right thing before performing an action. Did you select the brush position property just before pasting or did you just select the layer?

    also, be sure to click on MASK SHAPE before copying, not just on the mask. I’m not at the machine now, but I think you have to make a keyframe on the brush position before pasting.
