    HI,

Just wondering if there is any way use the write on effect directly in the comp window without going into a specific layer. I’m wanting to write over a bunch of layers and need to see them all while i’m painting it on. Is there another way to do this without have to precomp them?

Apply the effect to an adjustment layer above your other layers. You won’t be able to see all of the layers in the Layer window and adjust the effect path without precomposing but you can have the Layer Panel and Comp Panel open side by side – watching the comp panel as you make adjustments in the Layer panel.

For this, I usually create a “dead” comp. It is a composition that has nothing in it. It is basically a transparent layer.
