    hey all,
i am workin on an edit in which i want to animate text in a way that makes it look like an animated signature. i know i have to use the write on effect, but im having trouble accomplishing what i want.

am i goin the wrong route by creating the text in photoshop (edwardian script), bringing it into AE, and then trying to apply the write-on effect? is there some other way i should be going about this?

    thanks so much!

Click on Aharon’s head on the main AE page:

and scroll down to Animating a Signature, I think there are two parts.

After rereading that you’re revealing a psd with Edwardian script, I think Jayse will help. In the third part, Animation, he uses Write-on to reveal vines, it might help:

Basically you draw a mask over the text, Copy the Mask Shape, then Paste that into the brush position, and change the Paint Style to Reveal Original Image. See the tut for details.

[yikesmikes] “Basically you draw a mask over the text, Copy the Mask Shape, then Paste that into the brush position, and change the Paint Style to Reveal Original Image.”

Just a friendly reminder, you can accomplish the same thing with the Generate>Stroke effect without having to copy and paste the mask into another property.

The Write-On effect may be more helpful if you have a camera tracking the signature (you can link the camera’s point of interest to the brush position) but otherwise I find Stroke to be much simpler.
