Would this effect be done using Motion Tracking?

Im guessing each t shirt is a different composition and then they have motion tracked them on to the t shirt? how do u reckon they used the motion trackers to do it? sorry im just getting into motion tracking and love this effect. especially when he pulls his t shirt and the design falls off and the way the designs kind of follow the creases of the t shirts….
well hope people find the video of interest anyway! i wanna find out who it’s by…

At a glance.. I would say that the people would have a blue t shirt on.. then they would use a chroma key to get that off.. and then do as you say.. motion track (probably boujou or some top quality tracker) the people.. then just composite the new desing on top..

cool thanks for the quick reply. so would you say that something like boujou is much better than using the inbuilt tracker in after effects? are there any other good ones, or is boujou generally regarded as the best?

sorry.. saying that I’m not 100% sure if boujou could track this..
as it is matchmoving software. dunno
but I would imagine it was something a little more powerful than after effects that tracked this.. DS or Flame..
not knocking AE’s tracker at all.. its good.. but there are a lot better.

It’s very possible that this was done using Combustion’s tracker, or one of the high end Discreet (Autodesk) products such as Flame or Inferno. I’ve done some almost impossible stuff in Combustion, tracking motion-control camera shots (in which the motion control data was not provided). There was still a ton of frames that I had to place by hand to get the effect on the money (this was a :30 second flyover shot that I had to place video into television screens which had tracking dots on them).
Now that I think about it, if this WAS done properly with a motion-control camera, and the data was preserved, it’s a simple matter of bringing the data into Combustion, or maybe AE (I don’t know if AE can import MC data – I’ll have to check) and then applying it to the composition – done – with no tracking.

If you wanted to do this with just AE and no chroma. My best guess would be to precomp all of the effects you want to show up on the shirt. Then at the begining of the movement set a position key frame and just key the position of the shirt with the precomped graphics. Also Im not sure of the name, but there is a effect where you can rotate objects from left to right (not the rotate selection on the shelf). This way you would be able to move the graphic along with the shirt. I dont think regular AE motion tracking would be able to get this spot on.
