World sea currents in after effects
Hello Guys!
(Its my first post so i’m sry if I’m doing something wrong! )
I need to create a world map with an animation of the sea currents. Somthing like this:

But I have no idea how to create this effect. I mean, I could hand draw a bunch of mask and animate them, but I was thinking if there would be sort of a procedural way of doing it, or at least from a starting image like this:
If you guys have any idea or experience with this kind of thing, any help would be appreciated!

Can’t think of anything else but a very calculation intensive particle system. Not complex, but huge.

There’s apparantly an app on iphone that automates stuff like this.
The closest I’ve come in AE to a simple solution to this is CC warpomatic set to Warp Direction: Twist -
Hi, wow that’s a complex job, presuming that it has to be a somewhat accurate depiction of the currents. My only thoughts would be to start with a base image of Fractal Noise (Fractal Type – Strings). Precompose it and then in your main comp keyframe the Liquify effect – mainly the Warp and Twirl tools to create the streams and whirls.
