    Hi everybody,

I do hope someone can help me as I have a problem rendering in AE.

    I am running AE CS5 on a Windows 7 x64 system.
    2 Xeon X 56800 (24 cores@3.33 GHz)
    72 GB RAM.

I have to admit I’m a bit lost when it comes to the settings I should have for Multiprocessing in After Effects.

Could someone please tell me what should my settings be?

At the moment, they are as follow but my renders keep crashing:

    Installed RAM:72 GB
RAM reserved for other applications: 24 GB
RAM available for AE PR EN AME: 48 GB

    After Effects Multiprocessing:

    Installed CPUs: 24
CPUs reserved for other applications: 6
RAM allocation per background CPU: 3 GB
Actual CPUs that will be used: 14

Thank you so much in advance for your help.

    Charles

    Charles,

Your settings seem to be in line with Todd’s recommendations.

What are the error messages if any, on crashes?

Does it render fast when it renders?

What file formats (resolution mainly) are you working with?

What is the CPU and memory usage while rendering (does it display 100% utilization of those 16 threads)?

Have you tried playing with the settings, e.g. allocating more or less memory to other apps?

Do you have the most recent updates installed?

Do you also have crashing problems when Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously is turned off?

Are you using OpenGL rendering? (If so, turn it off.)

What format and codec are you exporting to?

Hi Alex and thank you for your reply.

It doesn’t even start rendering. After effects just freezes and then crashes. I have tried different settings but same result.

I am rendering a feature I have just finished grading with Colour Finesse.

Rendering settings are QT Uncompressed 1080p @ 23.976fps.

    Thanks for your suggestions…

    Hi Todd,

Yes, all the software is up to date.

When Render Multiple Frames Simultaneously is turned off, render starts no problem but obviously is quite slow….

OpenGL is enabled if necessary in AE’s Previews Preferences.

Disk Cash is checked with a Maximum Disk Cache size value of 200000 MB.

Also, I’ve unchecked “Disable layer cache” in the Secret Preferences.

    Hope that helps?

Turn OpenGL rendering in After Effects off.

Try exporting to a different format. Does the render crash then?

Try exporting a simpler composition (just a simple test composition with a single solid-color layer). Does the render crash then?
