  • Working with stock – green frames

    HI,
I’m working wiht stock footage in FCP – they are encoded as intel indeo 5.0 avi’s. When I edit with them I get random green frames in the video. SOmetimes, when I render they go away, only to re-appear again on the second or third playback.

I have tried importing the files again but no luck. Do I need to try and convert them to something else, or are the files screwed?

This could be related to anything. The first thing, though is the Indeo codec. Is it possible for you to get this footage in a more modern codec? One that’s less compressed? The Indeo codec was never meant to be an editing codec. It was an early web-delivery codec.

The green shows up with QuickTime issues or corrupted files. I think Arnie is right that you’ve gotten the wrong file. I’ve never even heard of that codec, but I’m just a pup. I would guess you’ve gotten their preview or web proxy version.

If the supplier can’t get you a better file, try transcoding it to your project format with Compressor rather than editing in the original AVI. QT can read them, but they’ll give you headaches if you try to work with them in FCS.

As it happens I cannot get the footage in any other type. I will try and convert it in compressor, which codec / file format will be best for me to convert it to?
