  • Working with HD in FCP5

    Greetings;

I have some HD quicktime clips that I need to bring into fcp5, edit, then export out of fcp. When I bring them in, I set the HD timeline to compress at H.264, but when I try to render, it wont work. If I try to export, a “codec error” message pops up. I need these clips (1724×718; 23.98 fps) to have the highest resolution possible because they’ll be played on plasma HD screens. Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Where did you get that file? It is a very strange size. HD is typically 1920×1080 or 1280×720.

I’ll agree with Shane, that’s a very strange frame size. HD is typically 1280×720 or 1920×1080 full frame size.

    Or 1440×1080 / 1280×1080 for anamorphic 1080i and 960×720 for anamorphic 720.

I downloaded the files off the internet, so they’re already compressed; However they still look pretty good. As far as the file size, I agree its a strange size. Looking at the file properties it says the original file size is 1920×800; then is says new file size is 1724×718. I set the dimensions to 1920×800 for for new exports. This seemed to work. Is it possible that the strange dimensions are what was messing up my export the first time I tried?
    Thanks for the help

That’s still not a proper HD frame size so you’ll get some distortion on the height when you display it on an HD monitor.

How do you intend to show these on a Plasma Monitor?

You can try this trick to edit them:

let me guess. these are movie trailers, right….

I downloaded a bunch from Apples site for a project (I had permission to use them).

The trick is to use Compressor to convert them to DVCPRO HD or uncompressed HD. Don’t try to use H263.

The odd frame size is because they are film aspect ratio. You can have Compressor add a letterbox, or you can blow it up in FCP which will crop the image on the sides a bit.

If you do not have legal permission to show these clips, it would be illegal to use them in a public display.

If you need the specific settings for Compressor, I can e-mail you the custom preset I created.

Yeah. I’ve used them before. They’re square pixel and FCP will treat them as such. Just drop them in the timeline of any project and scale or crop to your likiing. You’ll have to render, so if you can get by with the slow refrresh while trying to work with them, go for it. Or you could nest them and render them in the nest to make them easier to work with.

I think I could figure it out in compressor, but I would still love to check out your template if possible. These are movie trailers, and yes, the company I work for has permission to use them. Theyll be played on the monitors using a “digital video box”, a nice piece of technology I’m not that familiar with yet. my e-mail is bennykaps@hotmail.com.
Thanks a bunch, this is all really helpful.
