  • Working with fields (mixing 3D with motion graphics)

Posted by Kristian Carey on October 16, 2008 at 12:12 pm

Having not worked with fields in some time I was wondering if this workflow is correct for compositing field rendered 3D and motion graphics.

    1. Create new comp (in this case D1 720×486 .9)
    2. Import 3D renders (interlaced from 3Ds MAX) and set interpolation to lower fields
    3. Add misc text and motion graphics etc.
    4. Render footage at 720×486 and check Field Render to Lower field first

    Does this correct?

So in this method, when I interpret footage and render to fields the output should be identical to the original interlaced source?

This would be good for a TV output…for a web based output you should render out without fields, but you should always correctly interpolate imported footage.

PS…lower field is good for NTSC SD

Rendering interlaced out of a 3D package? Doing so throws away half your available resolution and seems a little pointless (may shave a few seconds off the renders, but still…).

That said, your settings breakdown is correct.

All of this is for broadcast (DVD), so what would you recommend for the 3D scenes – no fields?
