I have edited footage in FCP 6 edited with the Apple Intermediate Codec in HDV 1080i and am wondering if it would be possible to export in the Apple Intermediate Codec 720p. Will is distort because I didn’t film in 720p or will it just work just like a photo and “downsize” (even though I think the aspect ratio is different). Or do I export in what I edited in – Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i?

What would be the best way for exporting 1080i footage? I’ll exporting for both file transfer and online play with Exposure Room.

    thanks

I’d deinterlace it for web use, and use H.264 as the web codec. Don’t change the size or codec… it will likely look best staying as close to the original as possible.

Next time though, use ProRes instead of the AIC. File size will be a bit larger, but quality should be better.

Do you mean capture as ProRes or jut edit as that? Could I change my edit compressor and still retain quality?

I’d capture as ProRes. Better than AIC… no visual loss at all.

You can do this via firewire transfers from tape if you have a quad intel machine or faster, otherwise, it requires some more hardware. Best would be Io HD.

Next best is capturing as native HDV, and setting the renders to be ProRes. This is done from opening the sequence settings, and selecting the renders to be ProRes from the Render Control Tab’s Codec pop up menu…Faster than rendering native, and again visually lossless. AIC really stomps on the picture quality some…
