Working in 4:3 aspect ratio in FCP X

Make it simpler.

While your 1080 clips will arrive that way in the Event Browser, just create a project that has the SD 4×3 ratio you need – and when you drop the clips into it, just resize them all to fit the SD raster. (Resize one as you like, copy, drag select or select all, to highlight all your timeline clips and use Paste Effects to apply the resize to all the rest of your clips globally)

Since the Project is SD 4×3 – the output will default to SD 4×3.

Then you can use any of X’s Share tools to output other encodes all based on that starting point.

Compressor’s an extra stage I don’t think you really need unless you’re trying to output something that matches a client’s specific delivery spec.

It’s always better (for any nuber of reasons) to try and work at HD if that’s what your source material is and then scale at the end of the process.

This is great!

I will use this moving FWD. However:

I already have about ten projects in 1280 X 720 that I want to put on an iPad for iBook author (SD?) how can I get these final projects to be in the 4:3 aspect ratio that is antive to the iPad and not have those black bars on the top and bottom.

Also, is there any benefit to exporting in HD anyhow for an iPad? I realize the iPad 3 is “HD,” but at that size, HD doesn’t feel “mission critical” for these instructional videos for me.
