Working from synced libraries
I have a MacBook Pro at work connected to a QNAP NAS. My FCP libraries are on a folder on the NAS called ‘projects’. I access this over 10G Ethernet (Thanks, Bob!).
The projects folder is synced to my home iMac which is connected to a Thunderbay RAID.
When I open any of the libraries at home I have to relink all the video and audio files. When I subsequently open the files at work, I have to relink the files.
I’m stumped at this point. I’ve moved all the original media, cache and backups to their own folders in the projects folder. I’ve also specified that the motion libraries be contained in the main FCP library.
Anyone have any hints on this? I’d love to be able to edit at home every once in awhile and have those changes sync seamlessly back to the office.

The pathname to each media file is contained in the library and cannot be directly edited. That includes the volume name, which is different between your Thunderbay RAID vs the NAS. If you rename your Thunderbay RAID to have the same volume name as the NAS, and if the full pathname to the media files are the same, it should not require a relink.
There is a hack workaround for this involving Finder aliases, but in my testing it’s not 100% reliable. I definitely would not try it unless you have a complete file-level backup of your library. Even then I would not rely on it for a production situation. @joemarler Thanks. You’ve confirmed my suspicions and thanks for the link to that hack. I’ll try renaming Volumes today. Hopefully that will help.

@joemarler I ended up putting an alias in the Volumes folder of my home iMac to the projects folder on the Thunderbay. That fooled FCP into thinking the path was the same as work and now the libraries load correctly.
